Throughout Maryland, when frail, lower-income older adults with health and social needs are unable to function independently and need long-term care, their options are extremely limited. Some elect family-centered care with its associated personal, financial and emotional costs, while others move to traditional, institutional nursing homes that accept people without private insurance into multi-patient room settings. The Green House Residences will showcase a better alternative for elders and communities trying to provide for them.
GEDCO's mission is to "provide affordable housing with supportive services." THE GREEN HOUSE® model of long term care is a cutting edge example of this for frail older adults. GEDCO is determined to add THE GREEN HOUSE® Residences to the continuum of care for low to moderate income seniors we are developing on the Stadium Place campus. Through our efforts 49 elders requiring long term care will have a dignified place to call home.
The Green House approach is a radically new, non-institutional
model that reinvents the experience of long-term care for elders.
The universal care workers, known as the Shahbazim, will have
the responsibility of engaging residents in activities, including
preparing the meals, playing games and any needs the elder may
have. Shahbazim and the elders continue to grow as they develop
strong relationships with each other.
At Stadium Place, GEDCO strives to "maximize intergenerational contact to enrich the lives of young people and seniors." So we have intentionally designed each Green House Residence with a large screened in porch which will overlook the playing field where the Orioles and Colts once played, soon to be rebuilt for the youngsters in the community be the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation. The residents of the Green House will have "sky box seats" from which to watch the kids play - let the games begin!

This will be the first in the State of Maryland of the new Green House® model of resident-centered long-term care. All aspects of the living environment and health care are designed to allow a higher quality of life for elders. Elders work with staff to set all of their daily activities and meal times.
GEDCO is in the midst of a $12.4 million capital campaign to develop this project for the elders of Maryland, and our community has stepped up to help. We have received commitments of $10.75 million, including numerous donations large and small, totaling over $850,000 from over 250 individuals in our community, as well as $4.5 million from the State of Maryland and a challenge grant from The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation.
If you wouldn’t have it in your home, you won’t find it in the Green House! There won’t be any nurses’ stations, medicine cabinets or uniforms. Each floor or Residence of our Green House is a self-contained home for 12 elders. Each home consists of 12 bedrooms with personal bathrooms, all organized around the central common area called the “hearth.” The hearth includes the open kitchen, living room with fireplace and dining area, which together form the hearth of the home. This provides an opportunity for elders to build strong relationships with each other and helps support the intentional community that is being created.
